یکی عابد نیاسودی ز طاعت
نبودی بی عبادت هیچ ساعت

شبانروزی عبادت بود کارش
بسر شد در عبادت روزگارش

بموسی وحی آمد از خداوند
که عابد را بگو ای مرد خرسند

چه مقصودست از طاعت مدامت
که در دیوان بدبختانست نامت

چو موسی آمد و او را خبر کرد
عبادت مرد عابد بیشتر کرد

چنان جدی دران کارش بیفزود
که صد کارش بیکبارش بیفزود

بدو گفتا چو تو از اشقیائی
چنین مشغول در طاعت چرائی

بموسی گفت آن سرگشتهٔ راه
که ای طوطی طور و مرد درگاه

چنان پنداشتم من روزگاری
که هیچم من نیم در هیچ کاری

چو دانستم که آخر در شمارم
بیک طاعت زیادت شد هزارم

چو نامم ز اشقیای او برآمد
همه کاری مرا نیکوتر آمد

اگرچه آب در آتش بود آن
ازو هر چیز کآید خوش بود آن

هر آن چیزی کزان درگاه آید
چه بد چه نیک زاد راه آید

اگر نورم بود از حق وگر نار
خدایست او مرا با بندگی کار

نمی اندیشم از نزدیک و دورش
که دایم این چنینم در حضورش

چو موسی سوی طور آمد دگر بار
خطابش کرد حق از اوج اسرار

که چون دیدم که این عابد چنین است
ز سر تا پای او مشغول دینست

پسندیدم ازو عهد عبادت
ولی شد در عمل جدش زیادت

چو او در بندگی خویش بفزود
خداوندی خدا زو بیش بفزود

کنون از نیک بختانش شمردم
ز لوح اشقیا نامش ستردم

رسانیدم بصاحب دولتانش
بدو از من کنون مژده رسانش

چو تو آگه نهٔ از سر انسان
سر موئی مکن انکار ایشان

سری از جهل پر اقرار و انکار
که فردا نقد خواهد شد پدیدار

English translation

A certain worshiper rested not from obedience; He was not without worship for any hour. Worship was his work day and night; His life passed in worship. Revelation came to Moses from the Lord: "Tell the worshiper, O content man: 'What is the purpose of your constant obedience, For your name is in the register of the wretched?'" When Moses came and informed him, The devout man increased his worship. Such diligence in his work increased, That a hundred tasks were added at once. [Moses] said to him: "Since you are among the wretched, Why are you so occupied in obedience?" That wanderer of the path said to Moses: "O parrot of Sinai and man of the Threshold, I had thought for a long time That I was nothing in any matter. Since I knew that at last I am in the count, My thousand was increased by one obedience. Since my name emerged from among His wretched, Every task became more beautiful to me. Though it be water in the fire, Whatever comes from Him is pleasant. Whatever comes from that Threshold, Whether bad or good, becomes provision for the way. Whether my light be from the Truth or my fire, He is God and my concern is with servitude. I do not worry about His nearness or distance, For I am always thus in His presence." When Moses came to Sinai again, The Truth addressed him from the peak of secrets: "Since I saw that this worshiper is thus, And from head to foot is occupied with religion, I approved of him the covenant of worship, But his diligence in action increased. Since he increased in his own servitude, Godhead increased toward him even more. Now I have counted him among the fortunate; I have erased his name from the tablet of the wretched. I have joined him with the possessors of fortune; Now convey to him the glad tidings from Me. Since you are not aware of the secret of man, Do not deny them even a hair's breadth. A head full of ignorance, affirmation, and denial, Which tomorrow the true essence will become manifest."
