محمد ابن عیسی کز لطیفه
سبق برد از ندیمان خلیفه

مگر می رفت بر رخشی نشسته
سر افساری مرصع تنگ بسته

غلامانش شده یک سر سواره
همه بغداد مانده در نظاره

ز هر کنجی یکی می گفت این کیست
که بس با زینت و با زیب و بازیست

بره می رفت زالی با عصائی
چنین گفتا که کیست این مبتلائی

که حق از حضرتش مهجور کردست
بمکر از پیش خویشش دور کردست

که گر از خویش معزولش نکردی
بدین بیهوده مشغولش نکردی

شنید این راز مرد از هوشیاری
فرود آمد ازان مرکب بزاری

مقر آمد که حال من چنانست
که شرحش پیرزن را در زبانست

بگفت این و بتوبه راه برداشت
بکلی دل ز مال و جاه برداشت

نگونساری خویشش چون یقین شد
بکنجی رفت و از مردان دین شد

بسی تو خواجگی کردی نهانی
گدائی، خواجگی کردن ندانی

بیک جو چو نداری حکم بر خویش
که نتوانی جوی دادن بدرویش

چو نتوانی که برخود حکم رانی
چگونه بر کسی دیگر توانی

English translation

Muhammad ibn Isa, who through his subtlety, Surpassed the companions of the Caliph, Happened to be riding upon a steed, The jeweled reins held tightly. His slaves were all mounted beside him, And all of Baghdad remained watching him. From every corner, someone would ask, 'Who is this, Who is so full of ornament, beauty, and vanity?' An old woman with a cane was walking on the road; She said, 'Who is this afflicted one, Whom God has banished from His presence, And by deception distanced from Himself? For if He had not dismissed him from Himself, He would not have occupied him with this vanity.' The man heard this secret through his wakefulness, He alighted from that mount, weeping bitterly. He confessed, 'My condition is indeed such, As the old woman has expressed with her tongue.' He said this and took the path of repentance, He completely detached his heart from wealth and position. When he became certain of his own downfall, He retreated to a corner and became one of the men of religion. You have played the master much in secret, You are a beggar, you do not know how to be a master. Since you do not have a barley-corn's control over yourself, Such that you cannot give a barley-corn to a dervish, Since you cannot rule over yourself, How can you rule over anyone else?
