(5) The Tale of Rabia, May God Have Mercy on Her

Original content

English translation

Indeed, when Rabia, the possessor of spiritual station, Had not eaten any food for a week, During that week she never rested, Prayer and fasting were her constant work. When hunger brought weakness to her feet, And caused a severe breakdown in her limbs, A pious woman who lived nearby Brought her a bowl of food at that moment. Perhaps Rabia went in pain and distress To light a lamp from somewhere. When she returned, a cat had suddenly Spilled the bowl on the path. Once again she went to get a jug of water, So that she might break her fast in her heavy-heartedness. At that moment, the jug fell from her hand; Her liver remained thirsty and the jug broke. From her heart she let out a burning sigh, As if the world had set on fire. In a hundred states of bewilderment she said, 'O Lord, What do You want from this helpless, miserable creature? You have cast me into distress; How long will You turn me in blood?' A voice came: 'If you wish at this moment, I will grant you everything from the moon to the fish. But we will remove your many years of grief (for Us) From your heart; ponder on this. For the grief for Me and this deceptive world Cannot be gathered in one heart even in a hundred years. If you desire our grief always, Let your constant practice be the renunciation of the world. As long as you have this (world), you cannot face that (divine grief), For the grief of God is not cheap.'
