(5) The Tale of Shaqiq of Balkh and His Discourse on Trust in God
Original content
English translation
Shaqiq of Balkh, that teaching Sheikh, Was speaking in a gathering in Baghdad. He spoke pure words about trust in God, He spoke of heights loftier than the heavens. He said to the people regarding trust in God: 'Be strong and do not think of humiliation, For I traveled through the desert joyful, I relied on God and went free. Of wealth and property, I had one dirham, Which was with me in my pocket. Though I keep my heart on the Unseen, I still have that one dirham in my pocket. I went to the Kaaba and returned joyful, For there was no need for that dirham.' A passionate youth arose from his place, He said to him: 'Hear a word of truth. In that moment when you tied that dirham in your pocket, Where was your soul's reliance on the Unseen? Where was this trust of yours in God at that time Which cast you into a hundred doubts because of this dirham? Were you not a believer at that hour, Or if you were, why were you not secure with Him?' When Shaqiq heard these words from him, He trembled upon the pulpit because of him. He gave justice (acknowledged), saying: 'This proof is manifest. What can I say? The truth is with this youth.' In this court, not a single dirham fits, Nay, even a hair does not fit. That bewildered seeker of His suffered much, Now that he has been miserably slain by Him. Leave him in the midst of dust and blood, For this is how his rouge must be now. What a wondrous deed this dervish does, Who makes rouge from his own blood! What a wondrous deed, that until one is dead, A single shirt does not become a veil for him.
