(9) The Tale of Sheikh Abu al-Qasim Hamadani

Original content

English translation

Perhaps Abu al-Qasim of Hamadan, at that time When he suddenly fell out of Hamadan Came toward a temple for observation He saw a crowd standing on the edge He saw a pot full of oil on the fire Which was boiling like a foaming sea A moment passed, a Christian entered He bowed down in service before that idol They asked him, 'O bowed one, Whose servant are you to God?' He said, 'A servant.' They said to him, 'Then place your gift quickly.' In short, he placed the gift and went like smoke. Another entered and did the same In this manner, ten people were sent on their way. Finally, another came forward Powerful without power, and without self. He was lean, yellow, parched, and thin You would say he was a dead man on a bed. They asked, 'In the end, who are you? You lived as if you were dead.' He spoke thus: 'I am but a bit of skin; I am a friend to my own God.' When he spoke these words, they said, 'Sit.' He sat happily upon a golden throne. They brought that oil all at once And poured it upside down upon his crown. From the heat of the pot of oil, the man was desperate Instantly, the skull of his head fell to his feet. When the skull rose from the path quickly They burned him entirely in that place quickly. So that from his ashes, whatever dust there be Becomes a remedy for every pain there is. When the Sheikh saw that state from afar, he fled He struggled much with himself over that tale. He said to his heart, 'O you busy with play, When a metaphorical friend came to a Christian, He came to sacrifice his soul for friendship. If your soul has become a master of secrets, You too be such in the friendship of the Truth, Otherwise, sit with the effeminate. Since he is thus in the friendship of an idol, If your friendship for the Truth is certain, Say goodbye to your soul or leave your religion; If you cannot do that, then do this.'
