(17) The Tale of Sheikh Abu Sa'id, May God Have Mercy Upon Him

Original content

English translation

Thus spoke the Sheikh of Mihna one day: 'I went to a world-illuminating elder. I found him extremely silent, sunken into an infinite ocean. I said to him: 'O elder, speak a word, so that the heart may be strengthened by your speech.' For a moment he bowed his head in spiritual state, and then he said: 'O seeker of words, Do you know anything other than God? What should I seek from that? I will not burden you with what I say. But that which is the Absolute Certainty (Haqq al-Yaqin) cannot be spoken, and that is why I am silent.' 'Since it cannot be spoken, what is all this remembrance? Since it cannot be found, from whom is this cry?' 'Neither is His remembrance the work of every tongue, nor can one remain silent for a single moment.' Such a wondrous affair on the path was because there was a Beloved who was exceedingly heart-captivating. A lover was constantly required whom the Beloved makes sometimes non-existent and sometimes existent. Between the lover and the Beloved is an affair whose explanation is not fitting for us to speak. Even if you are eloquent, you would become mute if you were to try to describe this state. Since the Beloved was so beautiful that He was the sun of the earth and the sky, Since the Beloved was unique in beauty, without a doubt there had to be an eager lover. For when the Beloved displays His graces, He turns the eyes of all lovers into fountains of tears. If the Beloved had no lover, He would not be worthy of His status as the Beloved. No lover among the created beings came to be who could know the value of the Beloved except the lover. Such beauty in the market-day of the world becomes manifest through the yearning of the lovers. Since He is the Beloved, He is the one who brings forth His lover, since He sees no lover worthy of Himself. If the Beloved rises to the highest heaven, you will see no lover other than the Beloved. Since the Beloved is Himself the creator of the lover, there is in truth no lover other than the Beloved. Even if the lover becomes eternally nothingness, and even if he is lost to both worlds, Whether he is not or whether he is, the heart of the Beloved is in his hand.'
