ز یحیی بن المعاذ آن شمع اسلام
خطی آمد به سوی پیر بسطام

که شیخ دین چه می گوید در آنکس
که خورد او شربتی پاک مقدس

که سی سالست تا لیل و نهارش
سری بودست بگرفته خمارش

رسید از بایزید او را جوابی
که اینجا هست مردی را شرابی

که دریا و زمین و عرش و کرسی
بیکدم خورد، ازو دیگر چه پرسی

هنوزش نعرهٔ هل من مزیدست
گر او را می ندانی بایزیدست

چرا ناخورده می از دست رفتی
که هشیار آمدی و مست رفتی

بسی خود را تهی دستی نمائی
که ازجام تهی مستی نمائی

هزاران بحر نقد این جهانست
سراسر پر برای خاص جانست

چو اینجا مست از یک می توان شد
بدریا نوش کردن کی توان شد

اگر تو مست عشق دلفروزی
بیک فرمان بمیری و بسوزی

وگرنه، مست خویشی همچو مستان
بره رفتن چه برخیزد ز مستان

بفرمان رو اگر داری مقامی
که گر مستی نیاری رفت گامی

که هر عاشق که بر فرمان نباشد
اگر دردش بود درمان نباشد

English translation

From Yahya ibn al-Ma'adh, that candle of Islam, A letter came to the Elder of Bastam, Asking: 'What does the Sheikh of religion say about one Who drank a pure and sacred draught, Such that for thirty years, day and night, His head has been gripped by its intoxication?' A reply came to him from Bayazid: 'Here is a man who possesses a wine, Who drank the ocean, the earth, the Throne, and the Footstool In a single draft; what more do you ask of him? Yet his cry is still: 'Is there any more?' If you do not know who he is, it is Bayazid. Why did you lose your senses without even tasting the wine, For you came sober and went away drunk? You display much empty-handedness, Showing intoxication from an empty cup! Thousands of oceans of cash exist in this world, Entirely filled for the select of the soul. Since one can become intoxicated here from a single wine, How could one drink down an entire ocean? If you are drunk on heart-inflaming love, You will die and burn at a single command. Otherwise, you are drunk on yourself, like ordinary drunkards; What good does walking the path do for such drunkards? Walk by the command if you possess a spiritual station, For if you are merely drunk, you cannot take a single step. For any lover who is not obedient to the command, Even if he has pain, there shall be no cure.'
