(9) The Tale of Shuaib, Peace Be Upon Him

Original content

English translation

Shuaib wept for ten years out of yearning for God, After that, he lived with his eyes closed (blind). God restored his sight after that, Whereupon he shed tears of blood for another ten years. Once again, his two weeping eyes went dark, Once again, God granted him sight. Once more he wept bitterly for another year, Once more he could not see. When he became blind and fell down weeping, The Lord of the World sent him revelation: 'If you shed tears of blood out of fear of Hell, I have emancipated you eternally. And if you weep bitterly for Paradise, I bestow upon you Paradise, houris, and Rizwan.' Shuaib then opened his mouth in speech: 'O You whose command is eternal, I weep so bitterly out of yearning for You, For I am completely unconcerned with light and fire. Not for a single moment does Paradise cross my mind, Nor does any cry escape me because of Hell. I desire Your proximity eternally; I have spoken my pain, the rest You know.' A call came from the heights of intimacy: 'Since you are weeping out of yearning for Us, Now weep happily and weep bitterly, For your task is indeed very difficult, difficult.' Then he said, 'O Knower of Secrets, Do not restore my sight after this ever again, So that as long as that Vision is not attained, I may have no concern with seeing anything.' O dear one, since you do not possess this Vision, Weep much, for you have a lifetime of work ahead. For the more longing there is in the heart, The more tears there are in the eyes of lovers.
