(۲) حکایت سلیمان علیه السلام و شادروانش / (2) The Tale of Solomon, Peace Be Upon Him, and His Canopy

متن و ترجمه / Text and Translation

مگر یک روز می شد با سپاهیولی بر روی شادروان براهی
One day, it is said, he was traveling with an army,
On his canopy on his way.
درآمد خاطرش از ملک ناگاهکه کیست امروز در عالم چو من شاه
Suddenly, his mind was overcome by pride in his dominion, thinking:
'Who is a king in the world like me today?'
فرو شد گوشهٔ زان قصر عالیسلیمان بانگ زد بر باد حالی
A corner of that exalted canopy sank down,
Solomon immediately cried out to the wind:
که شادروان چرا کردی چنین توکرا افکند خواهی بر زمین تو
'Why did you do this to my canopy?
Whom do you wish to cast down to the ground?'
نیم گفت ای سلیمان من گنه کارتو زان اندیشهٔ کژ دل نگه دار
The wind replied: 'O Solomon, I am not the sinner;
Keep your heart safe from that crooked thought!
چنین دارم من از درگاه فرمانکه چون دل را نگه دارد سلیمان
I have received such a command from the Divine Court:
As long as Solomon guards his heart,
نگه می دار شادروان او راوگرنه سر منه فرمان او را
Guard his canopy for him;
Otherwise, do not submit to his command.
بسوی ملک چون کردی دمی رایز شادروانت شد یک گوشه از جای
Since you turned your desire toward your worldly kingdom for a moment,
A corner of your canopy fell out of place.
قناعت بایدت پیوسته حاصلکه تا بر تو نگردد ملک زایل
You must constantly practice contentment,
So that your kingdom does not perish.
که مغز ملک و ملک استطاعتنخواهد بود چیزی جز قناعت
For the essence of kingdom and the power of dominion
Is nothing but contentment.
ولی مغز قناعت فقر آمدتو شاهی گر بفقرت فخر آمد
But the essence of contentment is spiritual poverty (faqr);
You are truly a king if you take pride in your spiritual poverty.
اگر خواهی تو هم ملک جهانیمکن کبر و قناعت کن زمانی
If you also desire the kingdom of the world,
Do not be prideful, and practice contentment for a while.
قناعت بود آن خاتم که او داشتبخاتم یافت آن عالم که او داشت
Contentment was that signet ring which he possessed;
Through that ring, he obtained the world he ruled.
چنان ملکی عظیمش بود صافیکه قانع بود در زنبیل بافی
Such a vast and pure kingdom he had,
Yet he was content with weaving baskets.
ازان خورشید سلطانی بلندستکه از آفاق یک قرصش پسندست
The sun of sovereignty is elevated because,
Out of the entire horizon, a single round loaf of light is enough for it.
ازان در ملک مه را احترامستکه او را گردهٔ ماهی تمامست
The moon is respected in its dominion because
It has a complete round loaf of light.
چو پای از دست دادی پی چه خواهیملک چون هست ملک وی چه خواهی
Since you have lost your feet, why do you seek a path?
Since the kingdom is His kingdom, what else do you want?
تراگر بی ملک ملک جهانستازاین شومیت و هردم بیم جانست
If you possess the kingdom of the world without the true Sovereign,
From this comes your wretchedness and constant fear for your life.'
