(10) The Tale of Sufyan Thawri, May God Have Mercy Upon Him

Original content

English translation

Once, when Sufyan Thawri was a young man, His stature was bent like a bow from crookedness. Someone said, 'O Imam of that world, Why has your back doubled over in youth? In appearance, it is not the time for this doubled back, For it is not fitting to see your back like this. What has happened? Tell us the situation, Give a sign, give an explanation, tell the news.' He spoke thus: 'I had a master Who constantly walked the path and showed the way. When the time of his death became apparent, I went to his bedside and saw him in distress, With extreme agitation within him, Such that his blood boiled like the sea. His whole heart and soul were full of the fire of envy, On every single eyelash, a hundred drops of tears. Within his garments, he trembled like a leaf, His heart holding a hope at the door of death. I said to him, "O Sheikh, what is this state?" He opened his tongue, "Faith is in peril! For fifty years I have wallowed in blood, Now I am drenched by the sword of death. An address came: 'You are rejected by Us; Go away from this door, you are not worthy of Us.'" When I heard this from him, I mortified myself; A cracking sound came forth from my back. Since his words at such a time were like this, My back became like this, since this was the prospect. When my master's lot is such as this, How can the disciple have hope for his religion? When my master's end became truly this, I washed my hands of my own discipleship. A lamp whose path is exposed to the wind, I do not know how it can be secure. When the lamp of your soul suddenly dies, You will find no path to it, nor its scent. However much you seek a dead lamp, You will find it nowhere; how much will you run? Do not mourn the dead lamp, For it is a pity; beware, do not listen to idle words. Happy is that dog which is far from sorrow, But wretched is this child of Adam. Sorrow from dying would not be anyone's portion, If there were no resurrection afterwards. Seek news from this valley of the silent, And if you have news of them, seek to learn a lesson. Come alive through knowledge once and for all, Die, O dead-hearted one, to all but God at last. A Jew whose affair has fallen into distress, His path is opened to the table of Mustafa. If you too fall into need soon, In this meaning, you are no less than a Jew.'
