(6) The Tale of Sultan Mahmud and Ayaz at the Time of Death

Original content

English translation

At the hour when Mahmud, the ruler of the world, Was passing away from this treacherous world, He requested Ayaz of the silver breast, To speak a word of truth to him. They said to him: 'Only a breath of life remains, And is your speech still with Ayaz?' He replied: 'If his presence is not beside me Forever, what business do I have with myself? If my heart is to be illuminated by him, It is for a day like this that I need him. Any love that is not eternal, Is but a speck, even if it were the sun. Since my love for him is beyond measure, I need my Ayaz for the next world.' Finally, he called Ayaz of the silver breast, And whispered this message in his ear: 'O companion, by the truth of the Creator's covenant, When the coffin becomes the cradle of Mahmud, Never bind your waist in service before anyone else, For I do not approve of this, even if you do.' Ayaz opened his mouth and said: 'Yes, If I were a scavenger, A hunter like Mahmud would not be my prey. Did you think I was a scavenger? Since a Mahmud can be bound by a single hair, I shall not bind my waist before anyone but him. As long as the elite Ayaz exists, His end shall always be Mahmud.' At the hour when Iblis became accursed, He opened his mouth in praise and glorification, Saying: 'A hundred curses from You are more pleasant Than turning one's head from You toward others. If a dog is driven away from the door by a blow, It remains forever separated from the bone. What am I saying? When he heard the curse, He saw everyone weeping because of that curse. One who has drunk pure wine for thousands of years, Not a little, but cups filled to the brim, With a single dreg that he drinks at the end, How could he forget all that pure wine?' Although he tasted the dreg of the curse, In that curse he saw none but the Cupbearer. Since he saw that in the pure wine for thousands of years, How could he receive a dreg from anyone but Him?' Since the curse from that threshold was his portion, And 'accursed' was his name from that Presence, He did not look at whether this is ugly or beautiful, But he saw that it comes from His threshold. Since the curse was his robe of honor from the threshold, He accepted it with his soul, and the tale was made short.
