مگر سلطان دین محمود پیروز
ایاز خویش را پرسید یک روز

که از چه رشک آید در جهانت
جوابی راست خواهم زین میانت

چنین گفت او که در رشکم همه جای
ازان سنگی که مالی در کف پای

دلم از رشک سنگت می بنالد
که او رخ در کف پای تو مالد

اگر هرگز دهد این دولتم دست
نهم سر در کف پای تو پیوست

چو رویم در کف پای تو باشد
همیشه روی من جای تو باشد

اگر روی ایاز آید ترا جای
نهد بر آسمان هفتمین پای

چو نه سر می خرد یار و نه دستار
بطراری و دستانش بدست آر

ندیدی آنکه رستم از گزستان
چه با اسفندیاری کرد دستان؟

به باطن هرچه بتوان کرد میکن
بظاهر ترک خواب و خورد میکن

بدستان و بحیلت پیش می رو
بصدق معرفت بیخویش می رو

مگر راهی بدستان بازیابی
دمی با همدمی دمساز یابی

اگر با همدمت یک دم بهم تو
نشانی خویش را، رستی ز غم تو

تو بنگر کو کجا و تو کجائی
عجب نبود اگر باشد جدائی

English translation

One day, the victorious Sultan Mahmud of the faith Asked his beloved Ayaz: 'Of what do you feel envious in this world of yours? I want a true answer from you on this.' Thus he replied: 'Everywhere I am envious Of that stone which you rub against the sole of your foot. My heart laments with envy of that stone of yours, For it rubs its face against the sole of your foot. If this fortune is ever granted to me, I will constantly lay my head upon the sole of your foot. When my face is under the sole of your foot, My face will always be the place where you stand. If Ayaz's face becomes your footstool, He will place his feet upon the seventh heaven. Since the Beloved buys neither head nor turban, Acquire Him through cleverness and stratagem. Did you not see what Dastan (Zal) from the tamarisk-wood (Gazistan) Did to Esfandiyar? Inwardly, do whatever you can do; Outwardly, abandon eating and sleeping. Go forward with stratagem and resourcefulness, And advance selflessly in the sincerity of mystical knowledge (Ma'rifat). Perhaps you will find a way through clever means, And find harmony for a moment with your Companion. If you sit together with your Companion for a single moment, And settle yourself, you will be delivered from sorrow. Behold where He is and where you are; It is no wonder if there is separation between you.'
