(9) The Tale of Sultan Mahmud and the Duval-Player

Original content

English translation

It happened that Mahmud was traveling in all his glory, When on the road, a man was playing a duval game. The king said to him, 'O highway robber and thief, Do your eyes look upon me here, That you sit in the dust on the road, Teaching the king how to play duval?' The duval-player said to him, 'O ruler of the world, Go on your way, what do you want with this business? The game of duval and the royal drums and banners Cannot be brought together, like the moth and the candle. Become solitary and then practice this craft, Otherwise, content yourself with merely thinking about it. In this abode where no one has found heart or soul, Perfection can only be attained through clean play.'
