(13) The Tale of Sultan Mahmud and the Inspection of the Army

Original content

English translation

Perhaps Sultan Mahmud, the victorious king of the faith, Wished to inspect the army one day. His Ayaz was not present there, So the appreciative king sought him. The king sent someone to fetch him, saying: 'The king has stood here waiting for you. Come, for here is the parade of the army, But the purpose of this inspection is your moon-like face.' The king's messenger went and conveyed this secret; The silver-breasted Ayaz gave him this reply. The man departed and returned to Mahmud. The king asked him: 'Did you not see the object of my desire?' He replied: 'I saw him, but he is not coming. I heard a reply from him, and he does not come. I told him: Come, for the victorious king Wishes to inspect the army today. He told me: Tell the clever king That no one ever displays their beloved [for review]! If you wish to display me, Display nothing but yourself, and nothing else.'
