در آن ویرانه شد محمود یک روز
یکی دیوانه ای را دید پر سوز

کلاهی از نمد بر سر نهاده
بد و نیک جهان بر در نهاده

بر او چون فرود آمد زمانی
تو گفتی داشت اندوه جهانی

نه یک لحظه سوی سلطان نظر کرد
نه از اندوه خود یک دم گذر کرد

شهش گفتا که چه اندوه داری
که گویی بر دلت صد کوه داری

زبان بگشاد مرد از پردهٔ راز
که ای پرورده در صد پردهٔ ناز

گرت هم زین نمد بودی کلاهی
ترا بودی درین اندوه راهی

ولیکن در میان پادشایی
چه دانی سختی و درد جدایی ؟

که مومی با عسل خفته به صد ناز
نه از آتش خبر دارد نه از گاز

ولی هرگه که از وی شمع سازند
ز سوز ش روشنی جمع سازند

چو اشک از آتش آید افسر او
بداند آنچه آید بر سر او

تو هم این دم نه ای از خویش آگاه
ولی آن دم که برگیرندت از راه

به هر یک یک نفس روشن بدانی
که مرده بوده ای در زندگانی

English translation

One day Mahmud went into that ruin, He saw a madman full of burning pain. A hat of felt he had placed on his head, Having cast aside the good and bad of the world. When he stayed by him for a moment, You would say he possessed the sorrow of the world. Not for a single moment did he look toward the Sultan, Nor did he depart from his grief for a single instant. The king said to him: 'What grief do you have, That you seem to have a hundred mountains upon your heart?' The man opened his mouth from behind the veil of secrets, saying: 'O you who have been raised in a hundred veils of luxury! If you too had a hat made of this felt, You would find a way into this grief. But in the midst of your kingship, What do you know of the hardship and pain of separation? For wax sleeping with honey in a hundred delights, Has no knowledge of the fire or the shears. But whenever they fashion a candle from it, They gather light from its burning. When tears from the fire become its crown, It will know what comes upon its head. You, too, are not aware of yourself at this moment, But at the moment when they remove you from the path, With each and every breath you will clearly know, That you were dead during your life.'
