(12) The Tale of Sultan Mahmud and the Old Woman
Original content
English translation
It happened one day that the fair-faced Mahmud Had fallen to one side, away from the army. On the path, an old woman came before him With a staff straight as an Alif and a stature bent as a Dal. She had placed a sack around her neck, Walking on foot towards the mill. The king said to her, 'Since you have no strength and pace, For there is vigor in the sack, but no vigor in you, Bring the sack, since you have tied its head tightly, Place it before my horse and be relieved.' The old woman placed her sack before him, And like the wind, she hurried onward ahead. When the king's horse overtook that old woman, She opened her mouth and immediately said to the king: 'If you do not stay with me today, O king, I will not stay with you tomorrow in that burning. Since you have warmed your steed to a gallop, So that no one can even reach your dust, If tomorrow you spur many a mount, You too will not reach my dust; what will you do? Do not make such haste today, O king, So that tomorrow we may be together on the path.' The king shed tears of blood at the woman's words; He turned his reins and rode alongside her. If you hold the lesson of loyalty in your heart, Like Mahmud, it will grant you the grace of companionship. This is generosity, this is the covenant, and this is loyalty; This is beneficence, submission, and contentment. If you ever catch the scent of this musk pod, You will win the ball from the nine mallets of the heavens. But if not, you will fall into a state of regret, From which you will never rise until the Resurrection. O beggar man, learn to do good deeds; Learn beggary from such a sultan!
