(1) The Tale of Sultan Mahmud While Hunting
Original content
English translation
It happened that Mahmud was going on a hunt, He became separated from the army, set aside. He saw there was a village near him, He saw smoke in a place over the village. The king rode his horse quickly toward it, He saw an old woman sitting before that smoke. He said to her, 'The Caliph's guest has come to you, What fire are you making, oh chaste woman?' That old woman gave him this answer then: 'I am boiling a kingdom for myself, oh king.' The king said to her, 'Tell me, oh helpless old woman, Will you give me the kingdom?' She said, 'No, never! For I am boiling the kingdom for myself, When would I sell my kingdom for your kingdom? I am never a buyer of your kingdom, For my kingdom is a hundred times better than yours. Your kingdom has a world of enemies in its wake, My own kingdom is enough for me without all that sorrow.' When the king looked upon the kingdom of the old woman, He wept much for himself over his own kingdom. In the end, he obtained a handful of kingdom from that old woman, He gave her a purse of gold and departed at once. When they account for everything barleycorn by barleycorn entirely, There is no kingdom superior to the kingdom of the old woman. Although Rustam is a man of perfection, He is, however, in desire of the kingdom of the old woman (Zal). What is the spiritual path? Seeing the very essence of the way, Choosing a light burden and to cause little harm. To fill the stomach with a handful of kingdom, To consider kingdom and retinue as merely a grain of barley. Since there is no imperishable kingdom today, Why do you seek, when there is no perfection today? In this world, perfection is not possible, For if it is the moon, it has nothing but waning. At first it increases for two weeks, For two weeks it also becomes hidden. You now become aware from this example, That you are always deficient if you become the moon. Nothing has permanence here, So here, whether you seek honor or humiliation, Since the kingdom of this world is impermanent, How can you have stability in this instability?
