(6) The Tale of Sultan Mahmud with Ayaz in the Bathhouse

Original content

English translation

Perhaps one day, the silver-bodied Ayaz Having burned souls, went to the bathhouse alone

A companion said to the victorious Mahmud: 'Your beloved is in the bathhouse today.'

When this word came to the king's ear His heart boiled like an ocean.

Like a man in a mystical state, the exalted king Went toward the bathhouse immediately and alone.

In short, he saw the face of that fairy-like one And from him, the bathhouse wall was full of fire.

From the reflection of his face, the bathhouse wall Was all dancing from door to roof.

When the king saw his beauty from head to toe He saw his whole soul devoted to every single part of him.

His heart fell like a fish on a frying pan And from that fire, he fell in that bathhouse.

Ayaz fell at his feet, [saying]: 'O King! Tell me, what happened to you on the way today?

For your intellect, which was a perfect intellect Such an intellect, like an intellect, vanished.'

His king said: 'When your face was in sight The heart was unaware of each of your limbs.

Now that my eyes have seen every joint of yours I have become destitute for your every joint.

My soul was already burning from the love of your face Now, a hundred other fires have been kindled.

Since every single joint of yours has become my heart's solace Now, with which love should I play?'

O heart, seat the Beloved in your soul! Shower Him with pearls from your pearl-scattering eyes!

When He sits on the throne of your heart He throws away all the baggage of your heart.

Out of joy for Him, lose yourself Walk sometimes on your head, sometimes on your feet.

Watch and consume a world As you have consumed a world at every moment.

But if thousands of people gather And out of ignorance rain arrows upon you,

Since your Beloved is present with you If you let out a sigh, you are far from the work.'
