مگر سلطان دین محمود یک روز
ایاز خویش را گفت ای دلفروز

کرا دانی تو از مه تا بماهی
که ازمن بیش دارد پادشاهی

غلامش گفت ای شاه جهاندار
منم در مملکت بیش از تو صد بار

چو ملکم این چنین زیر نگین است
چه جای ملکت روی زمین است

پس آنگه شاه گفت آن نازنین را
که ای بنده چه حجت داری این را

زبان بگشاد ایاز و گفت ای شاه
چه می پرسی چو زین رازی تو آگاه

اگرچه پادشاهی حاصل تست
ولیکن پادشاه تو دل تست

دل تو زیر دست این غلامست
مرا این پادشاهی خود تمامست

توئی شاه و دلت شاه تو امروز
ولی من بر دل تو شاه پیروز

فلک را رشک می آید ز جاهم
که من پیوسته شاه شاه خواهم

چه گرملک تو ملکی مطلق آمد
ولی ملک ایازت بر حق آمد

چو اصل تو دلست و دل نداری
بگو تا مملکت را بر چه کاری

English translation

One day, the Sultan of faith, Mahmud, Said to his Ayaz, "O heart-illuminating one, Whom do you know from the moon to the fish, Who possesses more sovereignty than me?" His slave said, "O world-possessing king, In sovereignty I am a hundred times greater than you. Since such a kingdom is under my signet ring, What place is there for your earthly kingdom?" Then the king said to that beloved one, "O servant, what proof do you have for this?" Ayaz opened his tongue and said, "O king, Why do you ask when you are aware of this secret? Although kingship is your attainment, Yet the king of you is your heart. Your heart is subjected to the hand of this slave; For me, this kingship is indeed complete. You are the king, and your heart is your king today, But I am the victorious king over your heart. The heavens become envious of my station, For I shall constantly be the King of the king. What if your kingdom is an absolute kingdom? But the kingdom of your Ayaz has come in truth. Since your essence is the heart, and you have no heart, Tell me, upon what will you employ the kingdom?"
