(6) The Tale of Sultan Malikshah and the Watchman

Original content

English translation

One night, a heavy snow fell on the road, Sultan Malikshah had pitched his royal pavilion. From the cold, birds and fish were resting, All had drawn their heads into their corners. The Sultan thought and said, 'Tonight, Who will concern themselves with the Sultan, O Lord? I must go out to see in secret, Who is sleeping at this door in the cold.' When the Sultan put his head out of that tent, Both snow and cold struck him. He saw not a single watchman anywhere, Except for one sleeper with an awakened soul. He had thrown a felt cloak over himself, His pillow a tent peg, dust on his head. All night he had stayed with shoes on his feet, Stuck in one place because of the snow. I do not know if for one night, from the pain of your religion, You have ever been like this at this court? If you had a particle of compassion, Finally, such a night would have been your destiny. At the sound of the Sultan's footsteps on the road, The man leaped up and shouted at the King: 'Hey, who are you?' The King immediately said, 'It is I, O kind one, the exalted Sultan. Who are you, indeed, O man of action, Who keeps watch for the Sultan on such a night?' The man spoke up and said, 'O King, I am a stranger without a homeland. My homeland is nowhere but the King's court, I have no path other than serving the King. As long as my soul and body are together, My head is where the King's feet are.' The King said to him, 'I have given you a decree, I have given you the governorship of Khorasan.' Since the Sultan discovered a man one night, That man gained a respected name from him. If you, too, spend one night at the court of the Friend Until daybreak, what a great fortune, what an achievement! If you attain wakefulness for one night, You will reach the frontier of loyalty. From poverty, they will bestow upon you an eternal robe, So that you will see every single particle as a sun. If you acquire that vision for a moment, Even if blind, you will become a supreme sovereign. The great ones, for whom affairs were arranged, Saw things with the eye of nothingness. When the eye of nothingness comes to your aid, Your poison becomes sugar, your thorn becomes a rose.
