(1) The Tale of That Animal Called Halou'

Original content

English translation

That man of Khorasan has related That there is an animal equal to a hundred mountains. Behind the mountain that is named Qaf, Perhaps that place is its abode. Before it are seven plains full of grass, And ahead of it are seven seas in its path. There is a strong-bodied animal there, Which has no task other than eating. It comes early in the morning, And devours those seven plains full of vegetation. When it has emptied those seven plains, It drinks up those seven seas in a single breath. When it is completely finished with eating, It does not sleep a single moment at night out of anxiety and worry, Thinking: 'What shall I eat here tomorrow? I have eaten everything, what will I do here?' The next day, for its sake, the Ruler of the World Fills up the plains and the seas once again. Since human greed is of a perfect degree, One has no faith in God Almighty. How does a proud spark of fire, When it falls upon firewood, turn back? If you have a single speck of greed today, It will drag you backward with its burning. It is therefore better for you, if you but know, To pour water upon this fire. Otherwise, you are neither sober nor drunk; You will remain forever a worshiper of fire. And if even a single grain of the forbidden is in your possession, For every single grain there is an eternal punishment.
