(9) The Tale of the Bird That Lays Eggs for Forty Days in a Year

Original content

English translation

There is a bird at the foot of the mountain That lays eggs for forty days a year.

Its dwelling is in the borders of Syria, It has no inclination towards its eggs.

When it lays many eggs over forty days, It disappears from the sight of people.

A strange bird arrives from the road, And then sits upon those eggs.

It gathers the eggs under its wings in such a way, That eventually, it hatches chicks from them.

That nurse raises them continually in such a manner, That no one else could manage such care.

When a flock of its chicks grows feathers, All at once they gather together.

Their mother quickly takes flight, And sits upon a lofty mountain.

Suddenly, she makes a wondrous call from afar, So that the flock of chicks becomes aware.

When they hear the call of their own mother, They turn away from the strange bird and come to themselves.

They return to their own mother, And become separated from that other bird.

If for a few days the proud Iblis (Satan) Takes you under his wing, you are excused.

For when the call of the Truth (God) becomes apparent, You will inevitably leave Iblis and go towards the Truth.

Become such that if death comes forth, Your body remains, while your soul departs selflessly.

If you experience death before your destined time, You will have provisions against eternal death.

Your soul is a lamp in the desert, And the niche of the body has become its barrier.

When this niche is removed, that desert Becomes eternally radiant like the shining sun.

Wonders in your heart are beyond count, If you become aware, there is much to be done.

At every moment, advance anew in the faith; Constantly leave yourself and come back to yourself.

For in every state of selflessness and selfhood, You leave behind a world full of evil.

So that for every evil on the path of the secret, You may receive a world of goodness in return.

Be happy with whatever He gives you, And if He doesn't give, be joyful and free.

Whatever comes from there, do not reject it; And if bad comes to you, do not complain.
