(8) The Tale of the Blind Man and Sheikh Nuri, May God Have Mercy Upon Him

Original content

English translation

By chance, there was a blind man on the path, Who had opened his tongue, saying, 'Allah.' When Nuri heard the name of Truth from him, He ran toward him out of impatience. He said to him, 'What do you know of Him? And if you know Him, why do you remain alive?' He said this and became so beside himself, That you would say his yearning soul departed from his body. In that state of turmoil, he suddenly went to the desert; There was a harvested reed-bed on the way. He threw himself upon the reed-bed in such a way, That he tore his body to pieces from the wounds. Finally, because so much blood flowed from his body, His soul departed miserably with his blood. They looked and saw him slain; They saw his whole body soaked in blood. From the blood of the chest of that slain one of the path, It was written on the tip of every reed: 'Allah.' Thus should one listen to the audition of the reed, To be killed by a reed and rest in blood. When you listen to the name of the Friend, become like this; In every single atom, become a fiery sea. If you do not risk your life in friendship, For you, that friendship is but an illusion. If you are a keeper of secrets in love, Through the sincerity of friendship, you will risk your life.
