به حربی رفت فاروق و ظفر یافت
وزآن کفار هر کس را که دریافت

شهادة عرضه کردی گر شنیدی
نکشتی ورنه حالی سر بریدی

جوانی بود دل داده به معشوق
بیاوردند او را پیش فاروق

عمر گفتش به اسلام آر اقرار
چنین گفت او که هستم عاشق زار

دگر ره گفت ایمانت رهاند
جوانش گفت عاشق این چه داند

به دینش خواند عمر پس سیم بار
چو هر باری به عشق آورد اقرار

عمر فرمود تا کشتند زارش
میان خاک افکندند خوارش

چو پیش مصطفی آمد عمر باز
پیمبر را کسی برگفت این راز

پیمبر کین سخن بشنید از مرد
درآن فکرت عمر را گفت از درد

دلت داد ای عمر آخر چنین کار
که کشتی عاشقی را آنچنان زار؟

چو غم کشته ست او را وین خطا نیست
دگر ره کشته را کشتن روا نیست

ز حق کشتن نکو و از تو زشتست
که این را دوزخ و آنرا بهشست

اگر تو می کشی خود را نکو نیست
که این کشتن نکو جز کار او نیست

English translation

Farooq went to a war and found victory, And whichever of those infidels he captured, He would offer the testimony of faith; if he heard it, He would not kill them, otherwise he would instantly behead them. There was a youth who had given his heart to a beloved; They brought him before Farooq. Umar told him, 'Profess your faith in Islam!' He replied thus, 'I am a desperate lover.' Again he said, 'Your faith will save you!' The youth replied, 'What does a lover know of this?' Umar called him to the religion for a third time; Since every time he professed his love, Umar ordered them to kill him miserably, And they threw him wretchedly into the dust. When Umar returned before Mustafa, Someone told the Prophet this secret. When the Prophet heard these words from the man, In that reflection, he spoke to Umar out of pain: 'Did your heart allow you, O Umar, in the end to do such a deed, That you killed a lover so miserably? Since sorrow has already killed him, and this is no error, It is not permissible to kill the slain once again. Killing by the Truth is good, and by you is ugly, For this one leads to Hell, and that one to Heaven. If you kill, it is not good for yourself; For this good killing is the work of none but Him.'
