سپهداری برای کوتوالی
بجائی قلعهٔ می کرد عالی

یکی دیوانهٔ آمد پدیدار
به پیش خویش خواندش آن سپهدار

بدو گفتا ببین کین قلعه چونست
ز رفعت جفت طاق سر نگونست

ازین قلعه کسی کاعزاز دارد
ببین تا چه بلا زو باز دارد

زبان بگشاد آن دیوانه حالی
بدو گفتا تو مردی تیره حالی

بلا چون ز آسمان می افتد آغاز
بقلعه می روی پیش بلا باز

بلای خویشتن چون تو تمامی
بلائی نیز مطلب ای گرامی

ز خویش و از بلای خویش آنگاه
خلاصی باشدت کلی درین راه

که افتاده شوی و پست گردی
نمانی زنده تا که هست گردی

English translation

A commander, for the sake of a governorship, Was building a magnificent fortress in a certain place. A madman appeared, And the commander called him to his presence. He said to him, 'Look, how is this fortress? In its loftiness, it is paired with the inverted vault of the sky. Whoever derives honor from this fortress, See what calamity it wards off from him!' The madman immediately spoke up, Saying to him, 'You are a man of wretched condition! Since calamity first falls from the sky, By going to the fortress, you are advancing to meet calamity. Since you yourself are entirely your own calamity, Do not seek yet another calamity, O dear one. From yourself and from your own calamity, then, You shall have total deliverance on this path Only when you fall and are brought low; You shall not remain alive, so long as you exist.'
