(۱۱) حکایت درخت بریده / (11) The Tale of the Cut Tree

درختی سبز را ببرید مردی
برو بگذشت ناگه اهل دردی

چنین گفت او که این شاخ برومند
که ببریدند ازو این لحظه پیوند

ازان ترست و تازه بر سر راه
که این دم زین بریدن نیست آگاه

هنوزش نیست آگاهی ز آزار
شود یک هفتهٔ دیگر خبردار

ز حال خود خبر نه این زمانت
ولی چون بر لب آید مرغ جانت

بدام از دانه بینی مرغ جان را
که این دانه دهد مرغی چنان را

چو آدم مرغ جان را داد دانه
بیفتاد از بهشت جاودانه

ولی آدم اگر گندم نخوردی
همی مردم به جز مردم نخوردی

ز تو گر مرغ و حیوان می گریزند
چو زیشان می خوری زان می گریزند

English translation

A man cut down a green tree; Suddenly, a man of sorrow passed by it. He said: 'This fruitful branch, Which they have severed at this moment, Is green and fresh on the path, Because at this moment it is unaware of this severing. It is not yet aware of the injury; It will become aware in another week. You too are unaware of your state at this moment, But when the bird of your soul comes to your lips, You will see the bird of your soul trapped by the seed, For this seed captures such a bird. When Adam gave seed to the bird of the soul, He fell from the eternal paradise. Yet if Adam had not eaten the wheat, Humans would have eaten nothing but humans. If birds and animals flee from you, They flee because you eat of them.'
