یکی پرسید آن شوریده جان را
که چون می بینی این کار جهان را

چنین گفت این جهان پر غم و رنج
به عینه آیدم چون نطع شطرنج

گهی آرایشی بیند بصف در
گهی بر هم زنندش چون دو صفدر

یکی را می برند از خانهٔ خویش
دگر را می نهند آن خانه در پیش

گهی بر شه درآیند از حوالی
به صد زاری کنندش خانه خالی

چنین پیوسته تا آنگه که دانند
که این نطع مزخرف برفشانند

چنان لهو و لعب کردست مغرور
شدی مشغول مال و ملک و منشور

تو شهبازی، گشاده کن پر و بال
بپر زین دامگاه لعب اطفال

English translation

Someone asked that distraught soul, "How do you see the affairs of this world?" He thus replied: "This world, full of sorrow and pain, Appears to my eye exactly like a chessboard. Sometimes one sees an array in a row, Sometimes they clash together like two warriors. They take one from his own house (square), They place another in that house before him. Sometimes they advance upon the king from the surroundings, With a hundred groans, they empty his house. Thus it continues until they realize, That they must scatter this deceptive chessboard. You have become so deluded by such play and sport, You have become occupied with wealth, property, and decrees. You are a royal falcon, spread your wings and feathers, Fly away from this snare of children's play!"
