چو مجنون درگه لیلی بدیدی
نبودی تاب آنش می دویدی

شدی چون زعفران آن رنگ رویش
سنان گشتی ز سر تا پای مویش

فتادی بر همه اعضاش لرزه
چو روباهی که بیند شیر شرزه

بدو گفتند ای در انقطاعی
نه بیند هیچکس چون تو شجاعی

نه تو بیمی ز شیر بیشه داری
نه هرگز از پلنگ اندیشه داری

به صحرا و میان کوه گردی
نترسی از همه عالم بمردی

چو آید درگه لیلی پدیدار
شوی زرد و بلرزی چون سپیدار

چنین گفت آنگهی مجنون پر غم
که آنکس کو نترسد از دو عالم

ببین تا زور شیر عشق چندست
که چون موریم در پای اوفکندست

هر آن قوت که نقد هر نهادست
به پیش زور دست عشق بادست

اگر تو مرد آئی این سخن را
تو باشی همنشین آن سرو بن را

چو عاشق بر محک آید پدیدار
شود معشوق جاویدش خریدار

English translation

When Majnun beheld the threshold of Layla, He could not endure it and would run away. His face would turn yellow like saffron, And every hair on his body, from head to toe, would stand like a spear. A trembling would fall upon all his limbs, Like a fox that sees a fierce lion. They said to him: 'O you who live in isolation, No one has seen a courageous one like you. You have no fear of the lion of the forest, Nor do you ever worry about the leopard. You wander in the desert and among the mountains, And in your manliness, you do not fear the whole world. Yet when Layla's threshold appears, You turn pale and tremble like a poplar tree.' Then the sorrowful Majnun replied: 'He who does not fear the two worlds, See how great the power of the lion of love is, That has cast us down like an ant beneath its feet. Whatever strength is present in any nature, Is but wind before the power of the hand of love. If you prove to be a man in the face of this word, You will be the companion of that cypress-like beloved. When the lover is revealed upon the touchstone, His eternal beloved becomes his buyer.'
