چنین گفت آن یکی با خاک بیزی
که می آید شگفتم ازتو چیزی

که گم ناکرده می جوئی تو عاجز
نیابی چیز گم ناکرده هرگز

عجبتر، گفت، زین چیزی دگر هست
که گم ناکردهٔ گر ندهدم دست

بغایت می برنجم وین شگفتی
بسی بیشست ازان اول که گفتی

نه بتوان یافت نه گم می توان کرد
نه خاموشی رهست و نه بیان کرد

غرض آنست زین تا تو نباشی
نه این باشی نه آن هر دو تو باشی

English translation

Thus spoke one to a dust-sifter: 'A certain thing about you surprises me, That you, helpless, are seeking what you have not lost; You will never find what you have not lost.' He replied: 'There is something even more wondrous than this: If that which has not been lost does not come to my hand, I suffer to the extreme; and this wonder Is far greater than the first one you mentioned. It can neither be found nor can it be lost; Neither silence is the way, nor can it be expressed. The purpose of this is that you should not be; Neither this nor that, yet you are both.'
