(9) The Tale of the Elder Who Wished to Be Buried Between Two Cemeteries
Original content
English translation
When that elder reached sixty or seventy years of age, He eventually fell into the throes of death. Someone asked: 'O traveler to that other world, Where should I bury you? Mark a place.' He replied: 'I, who am bewildered in faith, Do not wish to lie near the assembly of Muslims. Since I do not possess the light of Muslims, What business do I have in the cemetery of the pious? Nor do I want the Jews as neighbors, For the Prophet is averse to them. Find me a plot of land between these two cemeteries, For I am neither of those nor of these. I had no footing in Islam, Nor was I on the path of Judaism. Such a person must lie between the two, To see what becomes of his state hereafter. You did not take a single step on this path in the end; Where indeed have you been all this time? You have no business here; your true work is there, And many steep obstacles lie ahead of you on that journey. So many steep passes lie ahead there, That the end is never in sight. In this valley where there is fear of losing one's life, If the soul turns to blood, it is only fitting. What a sea is this that has appeared within the soul, With neither beginning visible nor end visible! Though thousands of hearts turned to blood on this path, Yet not a single soul among them is truly aware of the reality. Who knows that every heart is like a lamp? What passion brews in each brain? With every passing moment, our grief increases, Because of this journey that lies ahead of us. What will you do if the lamp of the light of faith on the path Should suddenly go out?'
