یکی حبشی بر پیغامبر آمد
که توبه می کنم وقتش درآمد

اگر عفوست وگر توبه قبولست
مرا بر پشتی چون تو رسولست

پیمبر گفت چون تو توبه کردی
یقین می دان که آمرزیده گردی

دگر ره گفت آن حبشی که آنگاه
که بودم در گناه خویش گمراه

گناهم حق چو نپسندیده باشد
میان آن گناهم دیده باشد

پیمبر گفت پس تو می ندانی
که بر حق ذرهٔ نبود نهانی

گناهت ذره ذره دیده باشد
ولیکن از کرم پوشیده باشد

چو حبشی این سخن بشنید ناگاه
برآورد از دل پر خون یکی آه

چنان آن آهش از دل تاختن کرد
که مرغ جانش را بیخویشتن کرد

به پیش مصطفی بر خاک افتاد
سوی حق پاک رفت و پاک افتاد

صلا در داد یاران را پیمبر
که بشتابید ای اصحاب یکسر

که تا برکشتهٔ حق غرق تشویر
بگوئید و بپیوندید تکبیر

کسی کو کشتهٔ شرم و حیا شد
اگر مرد او تن او توتیا شد

اگر تو ذرهٔ خاکش ببوئی
بود صد بحر پر تشویر گوئی

English translation

An Ethiopian came before the Prophet, Saying, 'I am repenting, the time for it has come. If there is forgiveness and if repentance is accepted, I have a supporter like you, the Messenger.' The Prophet said, 'Since you have repented, Know for certain that you will be forgiven.' Another time, that Ethiopian said, 'Then, When I was lost in my own sin, Even if God did not approve of my sin, Did He see me in the midst of that sin?' The Prophet said, 'Then you do not know, That to God, not an atom is hidden. He has seen your sins atom by atom, But out of generosity, He has covered them.' When the Ethiopian suddenly heard these words, He brought forth a sigh from his blood-filled heart. That sigh rushed from his heart in such a way, That it made the bird of his soul depart from itself. He fell to the dust before Mustafa, He went pure toward the Pure God and fell pure. The Prophet called out to the companions, Saying, 'Hasten, O companions, all together! So that upon this one slain by God, drowned in shame, You may say and join in the takbir.' Someone who became the slain of shame and modesty, If he died, his body became tutiya (collyrium). If you smell a particle of his dust, You will say it is a hundred oceans full of shame.
