مگر شد آشکارا قحط سالی
به پیش خلق آمد تنگ حالی

سراسیمه جهانی خلق محبوس
شدند از بهر باران پیش طاوس

که باران می نیاید آشکارا
دعائی کن زحق در خواه ما را

پس آنگه گفت طاوس ای عزیزان
نگردد ابر بر بیهوده ریزان

شما را گرچه جز باران طلب نیست
اگر باران نمی بارد عجب نیست

عجب اینست کز چندین گنه کار
نبارد سنگ بر مردم بیکبار

اگرچه میغ ترک آسمان کرد
تعجب گر کنی زان می توان کرد

که نکشافد زمین از شومی ما
خورد ما را ز نامعلومی ما

تو پنداری که ازمردان راهی
کدامین مرد، سرگردان راهی

چو پندار تو برگیرند از پیش
کسی مرده سگی برخیزد از خویش

English translation

Once a year of famine became manifest, Hardship befell the people. A whole world of people, bewildered and constrained, Went before a peacock for the sake of rain, Saying, 'Rain clearly does not fall, Say a prayer, entreat God on our behalf.' Then the peacock said, 'O dear ones, The cloud does not shed its rain in vain. Although you desire nothing but rain, If rain does not fall, it is no wonder. The wonder is this: with so many sinners, Why stones do not rain down upon people all at once. Although the cloud has forsaken the sky, If you must wonder, you can wonder at this: Why the earth does not split open from our ill-omen, And devour us because of our insignificance. You think you are a man of the spiritual path, What man? You are just a wanderer on the path. When your self-conceit is taken away from before you, You will find yourself arising as no more than a dead dog.'
