مگر یک روز در بازار بغداد
بغایت آتشی سوزنده افتاد

فغان برخاست از مردم بیکبار
وزان آتش قیامت شد پدیدار

بره در پیر زالی مبتلائی
عصا در درست می آمد ز جائی

کسی گفتش مرو دیوانهٔ تو
که افتاد آتشی در خانهٔ تو

زنش گفتا توئی دیوانه تن زن
که حق هرگز نسوزد خانهٔ من

بآخر چون بسوخت آتش جهانی
نبود آن زال را ز آتش زیانی

بدو گفتند هان ای زال دمساز
بگو کز چه بدانستی چنین راز

چنین گفت آنگه آن زال فروتن
که یا خانه بسوزد یا دل من

چو سوخت از غم دل دیوانهٔ را
نخواهد سوخت آخر خانهٔ را

English translation

It so happened one day in Baghdad's bazaar, A fire fell, exceedingly burning and far. Cries rose from the people all at once, From that fire, a resurrection appeared. On the path was an afflicted old woman, Coming from somewhere with a cane in hand. Someone told her, 'Do not go, you are mad! For a fire has fallen into your house.' The woman said, 'It is you who are mad, keep silent! For God shall never burn my house.' At last, though the fire burnt a whole world, There was no harm to that old woman from the fire. They said to her, 'O companionable old woman, Tell us, how did you know such a secret?' Then that humble old woman said thus: 'Either the house must burn, or my heart. Since the heart of the mad one has burnt from grief, He will not, in the end, burn the house.'
