جهان را پادشاهی پاک دین بود
که ملک عالمش زیر نگین بود

نبودش در همه عالم نظیری
که بودش از همه عالم گزیری

سواد ملکش از مه تا به ماهی
ز شرقش تا به غربش پادشاهی

حکیمانی که پیش شاه بودند
که اجری خوارهٔ درگاه بودند

چنین گفت ای عجب روزی به ایشان
که حالی می رود بر من پریشان

دلم را آرزوئی بس عجب خاست
نمی دانم که این از چه سبب خاست

مرا سازید یک انگشتری پاک
که هر وقتی که باشم نیک غمناک

چو در وی بنگرم، دل شاد گردم
ز دست ترک غم آزاد گردم

وگر دل شاد گردم نیز از بخت
چو در وی بنگرم، غمگین شوم سخت

حکیمان زو امان جستند یک چند
نشستند آن بزرگان خردمند

بسی اندیشه و فکرت بکردند
بسی خونابهٔ حسرت بخوردند

به آخر اتفاقی جزم کردند
به یک ره بر نگینی عزم کردند

که بنگارند بر وی این رقم زود:
که «آخر بگذرد این نیز هم زود»

چو ملک این جهان ملکی رونده ست
به ملک آن جهان شد هر که زنده ست

اگر آن ملک خواهی این فدا کن
به ابراهیم ادهم اقتدا کن

English translation

There was a king of the world, pure in faith, Whose dominion over the realm was beneath his signet ring. He had no equal in all the world, For he was self-sufficient from all the world. The extent of his kingdom was from the moon to the fish, From its east to its west, he held kingship. The sages who were before the king, Who were pensioners of his court, One day, he spoke to them strangely thus, "A troubled state is passing over me. A very strange desire has arisen in my heart, I know not from what cause this has arisen. Make for me a pure ring, So that whenever I am very sorrowful, When I look upon it, my heart may grow glad, And I may be freed from the hand of the Turk of sorrow. And if my heart grows glad from fortune too, When I look upon it, I may become intensely sorrowful." The sages sought a reprieve from him for a while, Those wise elders sat together. They engaged in much thought and reflection, They drank much blood of regret. At last, they reached a firm agreement, At once they decided upon a gem, To swiftly engrave upon it this inscription: "In the end, this too shall swiftly pass." Since the kingdom of this world is a passing kingdom, Whoever is alive goes to the kingdom of that world. If you desire that kingdom, sacrifice this one, And follow the example of Ibrahim Adham.
