(3) The Tale of the Madman in the City of Egypt

Original content

English translation

In the city of Egypt there was a madman, Who had eyes in the essence of certainty. Thus he said: 'For any madman of the path Who dies suddenly from the grief of the beloved, That is no wonder; the wonder is that this burning Allows a lover to live even a day. If a lover remains alive for a day, They are like a candle in tears and burning. The lover's state does not find illumination, Unless, like a candle, they burn in separation. Since the lover's burning is greater than a hundred candles, Like a candle, their light comes from their own flame. If the wretched lover finds the beloved, They will spin on their head like a compass.'
