(6) The Tale of the Madman Who Asked God for Linen

Original content

English translation

A distraught madman rose up, Naked, he asked God for linen. [Saying:] 'O God, I have no shirt on my body, And if You have patience, I have none.' A call came to that selfless one: 'I will give you linen, but as a shroud.' That distressed madman opened his tongue: 'I know You, O Nourisher of servants! Until a helpless man dies first, You will never give him any linen. One must first die, destitute and naked, To receive linen from You in the grave.' O heart, if you become slain in this path, In a single breath, you will become alive through Allah. When you are covered in blood from head to toe, Go into the soil, drowned in your own blood. For every woman in whom milk appears, Her menstrual blood is withheld in the process. They transform her blood secretly, So that you consume blood but know it as milk. Since your beginning came from consuming blood, And your end is to be brought to the soil, One who is caught between soil and blood— Why does he lift his head high when he is overturned? If you, O nobody, know what you are, [You are] a handful of soil and blood kneaded together. You will become pure from blood and soil only When you consume blood until you become soil. Since your work is nothing but tears and burning, One day, a shadow from His tress will fall upon you.
