(2) The Tale of the Madman Who Saw a Coffin

Original content

English translation

A coffin was being carried on hands, Which that intoxicated madman saw from afar. He said to someone: 'Who was this dead person, Whose life the lion of death suddenly snatched away?' They told him: 'O passionate madman, He was a youth, a very strong wrestler.' The madman said to them: 'Although the youth Was capable and strong in wrestling, Yet that grief-stricken one did not know With whom he suddenly entered the wrestling match today. He has encountered a very powerful opponent, One of merciless and absolute strength. He has thrown him into the dust and blood in such a way That he will never rise again. But, praise be to God, it can be done, That this brave youth can be seen somewhere. Since there is no cure for anyone's falling, And many fall into this sea, If you fall here, you will have no soul, If you do not have faith when rising up. You took pleasure in the world, spread your wings, And plunged your claws into this carcass. You neither took nor bought this village; Consider it as though you never saw this village. No wise person would enter a world Which ends for humans in an instant. Why is your soul bound to the world, When this world is bound to a single breath? The real world is that one, if you are a man of it; Go to where you belong in that world.'
