(12) The Tale of the Madman Who Wept

Original content

English translation

There was a madman by the roadside, Sitting upon the ashes. At times he would shed tears like pearls, At times he would also scatter ashes. Someone said, 'O you captive to ashes, Why do you constantly weep so bitterly?' He said, 'My soul is full of fervor, That is why I am like a candle drowned in tears. For I must have the Truth without any other or complication, But the Truth has no need of me at all.'
