برای درمنه برخاست آن پاک
درمنه چون برون می کرد از خاک

برون افتاد حالی صرهٔ زر
ازان غم دست می زد سخت بر سر

بحق گفتا که کردی تیره روزم
چه خواهم از تو؟ چیزی تا بسوزم

چرا چیزی دهی از پیشگاهم
که در حالم بسوزد، می نخواهم

من از تو عدل می خواهم ستم نه
درمنه بایدم اما درم نه

اگر تو همتی داری چو مردان
بهمت خویشتن را مرد گردان

ز شاهت گر امید زر و سیمست
دل و جان ترا پیوسته بیمست

چرا باید طلب کردن زر و سیم
چو آخر جانت باید کرد تسلیم

بترک سیم و زر گو، جان نگه دار
که جان بهتر بسی از سیم بسیار

چنین آوازهٔ محمود ازان یافت
که جان او ز درویشی نشان یافت

که گر در ملک کردی کبر پیشه
نکردی خلق ذکر او همیشه

چو سلطان می شود از فقر مذکور
توانی شد تو هم در فقر مشهور

که شاهانی که سر فقر دیدند
پناه از سایهٔ زالی گزیدند

English translation

The pure one arose to gather wormwood; As he was pulling wormwood from the earth, Immediately a purse of gold fell out; From that sorrow he struck his head hard with his hand. He said to Truth, 'You have darkened my day; What do I want from You? Something to burn. Why do You give something from Your court, That burns me immediately? I do not want it. I want justice from You, not tyranny; I need wormwood, not dirhams. If you have ambition like men, Through ambition make yourself a man. If your hope from the king is for gold and silver, Your heart and soul are constantly in fear. Why must one seek gold and silver, When ultimately you must surrender your soul? Forsake silver and gold, preserve your soul, Because the soul is much better than abundant silver.' Mahmud found such fame from this, That his soul found a trace of dervishhood. For if he had practiced arrogance in his kingdom, The people would not always remember him. When the sultan becomes mentioned because of poverty, You too can become famous in poverty. For kings who saw the secret of poverty, Chose refuge in the shadow of an old woman.
