(3) The Tale of the Man Who Gave Alms to Dervishes

Original content

English translation

A great man said, 'My soul is full of longing, For it has been a lifetime that I am bound by this desire: That an alms from me should reach a dervish, Such that no one would see that alms, more or less.' When this subtle thought passed over his tongue, A hidden voice spoke to him at that very moment: 'If you are a master of certainty, you must Not see the alms that you have bestowed. You appear like a wretched corpse, For you are an affliction to yourself, dead or alive. You would not desire life if you knew That dying is better for you than this living. If you are prescient and foresighted, You will only see your own shortcomings and flaws.'
