قمر گفتا که من در عشق خورشید
جهان پر نور خواهم کرد جاوید

بدو گفتند اگر هستی درین راست
شبانروزی بتگ می بایدت خاست

که تا در وی رسی و چون رسیدی
درو فانی شوی در ناپدیدی

بسوزی آن زمان تحت الشعاعش
وجودت خفض گردد زارتفاعش

چو ازتحت الشعاع آئی پدیدار
شود خلقی جمالت را خریدار

بانگشتت بیکدیگر نمایند
بدیدارت نظرها برگشایند

چه افتادست تا نوری بیک بار
ز پیش نور می آید پدیدار

یکی سرگشته فانی گشته بی باک
هویدا شد ز جرم باقی خاک

یکی خود سوخته تحت الشعاعی
وصالی یافت بعد از انقطاعی

شب دو گفته با چندان جمالش
مدد گیرد ز نقصان هلالش

چو این شب خویش آراید یقینست
بدو کس ننگرد کو خویش بینست

ولی هر گه که بینی چون خلالش
درو بینند یعنی در هلالش

تو تا هستی خود در پیش داری
بلای جاودان با خویش داری

ز چرک شرکت آنگه دل بگیرد
که دل در بیخودی منزل بگیرد

زشیر شرک اگر خویت شود باز
بلوغت افتد از توحید آغاز

English translation

The moon said, 'In my love for the sun, I shall illuminate the world eternally.' They told it, 'If you are true in this, You must rise and run day and night, So that you reach it, and when you do, You will become annihilated in it and disappear. You will burn then beneath its rays, Your existence will be diminished by its loftiness. When you reappear from beneath its rays, The people will become purchasers of your beauty. They will point you out to one another with their fingers, They will open their eyes to look upon your visage. What has occurred that a light all at once Appears from before the [Ultimate] Light? A bewildered, annihilated, and fearless one Has become manifest from the enduring mass of earth. A self-immolated one beneath the rays Has found union after a period of separation. The two-day-old moon, despite such beauty, Receives its aid from the deficiency of its crescent. When this night adorns itself, it is certain That no one will look upon it, for it is self-centered. But whenever you see it as thin as a sliver, They look upon it, that is, upon its crescent. As long as you place your own existence before you, You carry an eternal affliction with you. The heart is only cleansed from the filth of association (shirk) When the heart takes its dwelling in selflessness. If your disposition is weaned from the milk of association, Your maturity will commence from divine unity (tawhid).'
