خوش آوازی ز خیل نیکخواهان
مؤذن بود در شهر سپاهان

در آن شهر از بزرگی گنبدی بود
که سر در گنبد گردنده می سود

بر آن گنبد شد آن مرد سرافراز
نماز فرض را می داد آواز

یکی دیوانهٔ می رفت در راه
یکی پرسید ازو کای مرد آگاه

چه می گوید برین گنبد مؤذن
جوابش ده تو ای محبوب محسن (؟)

که این جوزست از سر تا قدم پوست
که می افشاند او بر گنبد ای دوست

چو او از صدق معنی می نجنبد
یقین می دان که چون جوزست و گنبد

تو همچون جوزی از غفلت که داری
نود نه نام بر حق می شماری

چو در تو هیچ نامی را اثر نیست
ز صد کم یک ترا صد یک خبر نیست

چو نعمت بر تو نشمرد او هزاران
تو هم مشمر بدو چون صرفه کاران

چو نام خویشتن حق بی نشان کرد
چه گونه یاد او هرگز توان کرد

چو نتوانی ز کنه او نفس زد
نمی باید نفس از هیچکس زد

English translation

A sweet-voiced man from the ranks of the well-wishers Was a muezzin in the city of Isfahan. In that city was a dome of such grandeur That its head rubbed against the revolving heavens. Upon that dome ascended that proud man, And called out the obligatory prayer. A madman was passing along the road; Someone asked him: 'O aware man, What is the muezzin saying upon this dome? Give me an answer, O beloved benefactor.' He replied: 'This is a walnut, skin from head to toe, Which he is scattering upon the dome, my friend. Since he does not stir with the sincerity of meaning, Know for certain that it is like a walnut and a dome. You too are like a walnut in your negligence; You count ninety-nine names of the Truth. Since none of these names has any effect within you, Of the hundred minus one, you have not a hundredth of awareness. Since He did not count His thousands of blessings upon you, Do not count them with Him like calculation-minded bargainers. Since the Truth has made His own Name traceless, How can He ever be remembered? Since you cannot breathe of His essence, No one should draw a breath at all.'
