(6) The Tale of the Murder of the Son of the Wise Marzban

Original content

English translation

There was a perfect sage named Marzban, In whom Anushirvan found comfort. He had a son like the sun, Whose heart had opened the door to every science. A foolish man suddenly killed that son, And wounded the soul of that father with pain. Someone close to him said to Marzban, 'You must seek retribution against that dog.' Marzban quickly gave him an answer, 'In truth, shedding blood is of no such benefit, That I should join him in that deed, And shed the blood of a living being so miserably.' They said to him, 'Then take the blood money.' He said, 'I will never ask for that blood money, I cannot put a price on my son, For taking blood money is like drinking blood. That evildoer did not do a very good deed, That I should also have to do his deed. If drinking the blood of one's son is not permissible, Why then is drinking one's own blood not a sin? That person will have drunk his own blood, Who has wasted his own life. You have only a week or two left of your life, And the rest, which was the best part, is gone. Suppose you repent for a week or two, What remedy will you find for that lost life?'
