(12) The Tale of the Sinner on the Day of Resurrection
Original content
English translation
Such a report is true from the Prophet That God says to a person on the Day of Resurrection: 'O servant, come and read the record To see what you have done in your long life.' When the servant reads the record through and through He sees nothing but transgressions. When he sees nothing but blackness in the record He opens his tongue and says: 'O God, I am going to Hell from this life of loss.' God tells him: 'Read the back of the record.' When he reads the back of the record at once He finds it written thus at the end of the matter: He has become regretful through repentance All his pain has become a cure. In place of every evil, the Knower of Secrets Has given him ten good deeds in return. When he has become regretful for the evil God has written ten good deeds. When the servant sees that, he becomes joyful Excellent is the servant who becomes free like that! He says to Truth: 'O Absolute Sustainer, I did not see from the Honorable Scribes justice, For I have many more sins than these Which those two watchful ones did not write against me. Say that they wrote them against me, the wretched one Perhaps they erased those and wrote these. So that as much as I did evil from the beginning For each one You give ten good deeds back. Although I am a sin-stained person I profited from my sins through Your grace.' The Prophet, from such speech and action, Laughed and his teeth became visible. Then he said: 'O Pure Owner, How bold is this handful of dust in the end!' From the secret that is within the pure soul If you become aware, there is fear of destruction. Who knows what this wonderful secret is? What is the cause of such wonderful secrets? You have many twists and turns before you They did not come so that you are nothing at all. But all this fell on the path So that you might become aware of yourself. Since you were the beloved, He acted thus That He hid from His own eye and creation. He placed thousands of veils of causes Inside all of them He placed a bed. You with the Beloved under the veil on the bed Can sleep without any other; what good fortune! Since the Beloved cannot be seen from head to toe It is better thus that the place of the Beloved be. For the manifestation of the Beloved never Is permitted; it must be hidden out of honor.
