(۱۹) حکایت آن دزد که گرفتار شد / (19) The Tale of the Thief Who Was Caught

مگر شد ناگهی دزدی گرفتار
ز گرد راه بردندش سوی دار

امان می خواست از عجز و نیازی
که ریزد آب و بگزارد نمازی

که یا رب در چنین وقتی وجائی
که می بینم بهر موئی بلائی

ببین تاتیغ قهرت بر سر دار
چه می آرد برویم آخر کار

تو از قهرم چنین حیران گرفته
من از مهر تو ترک جان گرفته

چنینم من که گفتم تو چنانی
کنون جان می دهم دیگر تو دانی

چنین ده جان اگر جان می دهی تو
وگرنه عمر تاوان می دهی تو

اگر خونت زند از قهر او جوش
مکن هرگز بلطف او را فراموش

سبک رو چون گرانجانی زره نیست
بشادی زو که غم رادستگه نیست

عروسی جهان ماتم نیرزد
که صد شادی او یک غم نیرزد

چو خواهد کرد گردونت پیاده
سواری را بکن ابرو گشاده

English translation

Suddenly, a thief was caught, From the dust of the road, they took him to the gallows. He sought a reprieve out of helplessness and need, To perform ablution and offer a prayer. Saying, 'O Lord, in such a time and place, Where I see a calamity for every hair, See what the sword of Your wrath upon the gallows, Brings upon me at the end of the affair. You have bewildered me thus with Your wrath, While I, out of love for You, have forsaken my life. I am as I have said, and You are as You are; Now I give up my life, the rest is up to You.' Give up your life like this, if you are to give up your life, Otherwise, you are paying the penalty with your life. If your blood boils from His wrath, Never forget Him by His grace. Go lightly, for heavy-heartedness is not the way, Rejoice in Him, for sorrow has no dominion. The wedding of the world is not worth the mourning, For a hundred of its joys are not worth a single sorrow. Since the heavens will eventually make you dismount, Ride on with an open and cheerful brow.
