(7) The Tale of the Thief Whose Hand Was Cut Off

Original content

English translation

They cut off a thief's hand, indeed, He uttered no cry, took his hand and ran. They said to him, 'O afflicted one, what will you do with this severed hand?' He said, 'The name of a special Friend I had engraved there with sincerity. Now, as long as I live, this is enough for me, for without this, life is forbidden to me. Though from my hand there is no portion but pain, since the Friend's name is on my hand, there is no grief.' Since the accursed Iblis was a knower of secrets, if he did not prostrate, it was for this reason. He grudged that secret to His creation, he did not prostrate, and began his claim, So that both he and the creation of the world as well should not see that door and that threshold, So that a light from that veil of glory should never appear defiled in any sight.
