(5) The Tale of the Young Man Who Married a Beautiful Wife and She Died

Original content

English translation

They gave a youth a wife as beautiful as the moon, Whose description no one's intellect could comprehend. Her beauty was a sign for the heartsick, Her lips were the life-giving remedy for those with closed lips. By fate, that bride who was like the moon died; She had no illness, but died in the pains of childbirth. In short, when her husband buried her in the earth, And hid that sun-like face of hers under the clay, He had a bottle of rosewater with him, With which he had once washed the feet of that moon. With that rosewater, he turned the soil on top of her grave into clay, But mixed it evenly with his bloody tears. Why did he become bound to the feet of that beloved, When he must ultimately, unwillingly, wash his hands of her? Why did he wash her feet during the wedding, When his destiny was to wash his hands of her? What shall I say of you and of myself? Alas! Alas for this coming and going, alas!
