(13) On the Meaning That Backbiting Is a Great Sin

Original content

English translation

It is thus recounted in the Torah that the person Who engages in backbiting, and then thereafter Repents from it, will be the last person Whom the Friend (God) admits into the courtyard of Paradise. But if he does not repent, the very first person Who enters into Hell will be him, and no one else. If the blade of his tongue, like a flame, Becomes perfectly straight in its sheath like a Khatti spear, That would be the sign of the righteousness of his heart, For to the heart, that would be the first station. In this assembly, for the great ones of the world, There is no wine for the soul quite like silence.
