بصحرا در یکی دیوانه بودی
که چون دیوانگیش اندر ربودی

بسوی آسمان کردی نگاهی
بدرد دل بگفتی یا الهی

ترا گر دوست داری نیست پیشه
ولی من دوستت دارم همیشه

ترا گرچه بود چون من بسی دوست
بجز تو من نمی دارم کسی دوست

چگونه گویمت ای عالم افروز
که یک دم دوستی از من درآموز

چنان می زی، که هر دم صد جهان جمع
ز شوق او چو پروانه ست زان شمع

اگرچه نه بعلت می توان یافت
ولیکن هم بدولت می توان یافت

اگر یک ذره دولت کارگر شد
به سوی آفتابت راهبر شد

English translation

In the desert, there was a madman, who, when his madness overcame him, would look toward the heavens and say with a heart full of pain, 'O my Lord, Even if loving is not Your way, I love You always. Although You have many lovers like me, I have no lover/friend other than You. How can I say to You, O Illuminator of the World, Learn friendship from me for a single moment? Live in such a way that every moment, a hundred worlds gathered are like moths drawn to that candle out of yearning for Him. Although it cannot be attained by cause or reason, yet it can be found through divine favor and good fortune. If but a single atom of that favor becomes effective, it will guide you toward the Sun.'
