بمجنون گفت آن یاری ز یاری
که لیلی را تو چندین دوست داری

بدو گفتا بحق عرش و کرسی
که گر من دوستش دارم چه پرسی

رفیقش گفت چندین شعر گفتن
شبانروزیت نه خوردن نه خفتن

میان خاک و خون بودن بزاری
چه بودست این همه بر دوستداری؟

جوابش دادکان بگذشت اکنون
که مجنون لیلی و لیلیست مجنون

دوئی برخاست اکنون از میانه
همه لیلیست، مجنون بر کرانه

چو شیر و می بهم پیوسته گردند
ز نقصان دو بودن رسته گردند

یکی چون آشکارا گشت اینجا
دوئی را نیست یارا گشت اینجا

اگر هستی بجان او را خریدار
چو تو گم گشتی او آمد پدیدار

چنان گم شو که دیگر تا توانی
نیابی خویش را در زندگانی

English translation

A friend said to Majnun out of companionship, 'Why do you love Layla so much?' He replied, 'By the truth of the Divine Throne and Chair, If I love her, why do you even ask?' His companion said, 'Writing so many poems, Neither eating nor sleeping day and night,' 'Being miserably in the midst of dust and blood, What was the purpose of all this love?' He answered him, 'That stage has passed now, For Majnun is Layla and Layla is Majnun.' 'Duality has risen and departed from our midst, All is Layla, and Majnun is cast aside.' 'When milk and wine are joined together, They are delivered from the deficiency of being two.' 'Since oneness became manifest here, Duality has no strength or place here.' 'If you are a purchaser of her with your soul, When you are lost, she becomes manifest.' 'Become so lost that as much as you can, You do not find yourself in this life again.'
